A group of year ten students attended the Further Maths Support Programme Easter Lectures at Newcastle University on Tuesday 4th April. The lectures highlighted the role of mathematics in everyday life and gave students a taste of where a career in mathematics could lead them.
The first lecture explored the links between mathematics and music, presented by Dr Aoife Hunt, with students using probability to create their own short musical composition. The second was on the hidden mathematics in everyday life, presented by Katie Steckles, looking at the way mathematics is used to ensure modern communication methods work.
