Maths Festival

20 Feb 2018

A selection of Year 8 and Year 9 pupils visited the Newcastle Centre for Life in February for the Annual Maths festival. Everyone enjoyed a fabulous day of problem solving, star gazing, dinosaur exhibitions and 4-D cinema experiences.

The students were an absolute credit to the school in every aspect. It was impossible to differentiate the year groups as the team work ethic kicked to solve whatever problems were thrown at them.

However, there was a few students who were selected by the hosts as excelling mathematically during different tasks throughout the day who I would like to mention.

  • Lily - scintillating sequence spotting - the powers of 2 based on the binary code used in all computer programming.
  • Megan - captivating constellation commentary - planetarium exercise on finding where you are in the world using only the constellations
  • Jamie - the greatest Showman mind blowing 'mathmagician' - insane numeracy skills on display from Jamie who was the only person(Mr Basiliaco and Mrs Robson included) to figure out the trick performed by Durham University PGCE students. He then performed it himself on stage.

It really was a fantastic day for all.
