Manchester Debate

21 Apr 2017

On Thursday 20th April, Miss Graham and Mr Reed took 8 Year 9 students to Manchester to take part in a regional heat debate.

Although the students did not get through to the London debate, each did amazing. For all students it was their first debate and despite being nervous and slightly intimidated (we were in a Grammar School) they were articulate, quick thinking and analytical.

I had several comments about their impeccable behaviour throughout the day.

In particular, Melissa, Theo and Leah were thrown in at the deep end, having to make a team as other schools had not turned up. Their attitude was fantastic and despite having no preparation time they managed some brilliant arguments - the judges said they couldn't even tell they had just been thrown in to it and would have hated to have been in that position themselves. One even told Theo to use his charm as he was exceptionally nervous.

All judges commented on the language and style used by our students, even commenting that the impromptu debate sounded pre-planned as Tamsin's language and speech was so sophisticated and Elliot's laid-back humourous approach with Kristie's analytical style was  something which will be feared in the future.

I cannot put into words how proud I am of them.

They were superstars.

Well done to all students who took part!
