A fantastic opportunity today for our students. We were visited by six NHS ambassadors representing a range of careers including an intensive physiotherapist, a community physiotherapist, a children's dietitian, a music therapist and a therapeutic radiologist (See more).

Congratulations to our year 9 students who won the rollercoaster challenge at Sunderland College. On a recent visit to the college, students were challenged to design an innovative theme park. Our winning team impressed with their original concept, their work ethic and their presentation skills. The visit was part of our year 9 taster sessions at the college which will continue after Christmas.

Cookery Club Chocolate Wreaths

Cookery Club Chocolate Wreaths

The students in the Cookery Club have excelled themselves this week making Chocolate Wreaths. They have made the wreaths as a gift for the elderly in the community who visit the school every year and enjoy a Christmas lunch. The milk, dark or white chocolate gifts were made to sparkle and creatively decorated with marshmallow, popcorn and cranberries. The students stayed extra late to ensure the gifts were wrapped and tagged before the big event tomorrow. Roll on 2020!

Our latest guest speaker was from a Prison Officer who works at HMP Frankland. Students learnt about the typical working day of a prison officer and how a prison operates. They also had the opportunity to discuss and consider the skills and qualities needed in this job role. Another fascinating insight into the world of work. Remember - careers talks take place each week. These are advertised outside D01 and through tutor notices.

On Friday, Mr McKenna and Miss Keys took out 4 teams of students from year 7,8 and 9 to represent the school at the Wearside cross country championships competing against students from 9 different schools. Michelle talked to us about what her job involves on a daily basis; the pathway she took to her current role; what her workplace looks like and she brought a range of equipment for us to look at (see more)

Year 9 football Nationals result

Our Year 9 boys faced a long journey down to Laurence Jackson School (Guisborough) for the 4th round of the English Schools National Cup, and booked their place in the last 64, with a comfortable 5-2 victory. Goals from Harley Telford (2), Khaya Dlamini (2) and Callum Hughes sealed the win against a huge and really impressive school. The boys put the pressure on right from kick off and that paid off! Well done to Mr Kelly and the boys!



Scholars programme

Scholars programme

A group of year 10 students are attending OxNet's Scholars programme based at Southmoor Academy, So far they have participated in sessions, led by university academics, on spectroscopy, English language, comic book drawing and politics. This week they experienced the wonder of our galaxy and got to gaze at the night sky in Durham University's inflatable planetarium.

Cadets climbing competition

On Saturday, the following took part in a Climbing Competition open to all Sea, Army and Air Cadets in the Northeast: Farrell Parkin Yr 11 Rickard Samuel Yr 11 Heather McLeod Yr 9 Sam Dawson Yr 8 Mollie Richmond Yr 8 All scored at least 45/50 in the First Round so went forward to more challenging climbs in the Second Round.

A number of Year 8-10 students took part in the State of the City debate this morning. This was a wonderful experience for the students, with Miss Zakaidze saying "These students were outstanding at the State of the City Debate this morning, speaking eloquently about the range of issues on the agenda". Congratulations to everybody who took part!

St Benedict's Hospice Dedication Tree

Three of our year 9 students showed their support for a local charity by volunteering at the Dedication Tree in The Bridges. The Dedication Tree helps to raise vital funds for St Benedict's Hospice. The students took donations as people placed baubles on the tree to remember loved ones and they also sold Christmas gifts.

Christmas has arrived early in the Cookery Club. Students baked a Castle View Cookery Club favourite…. Christmas Crumble Tray Bake. Their cooking skills are developing well and every student loves whatever they cook. The bakes were taken home to be shared with their families.
